Dear Parents of MGC Rowers,
Currently we are in the middle of a very busy regatta season. As a requirement at regattas, we are required to provide a Boat Race Official (BRO) for every regatta that we attend. If we do not provide a BRO for the regatta, the school will be fined a substantial sum of money, which exponentially increases every time we do not provide a BRO. MGC is a rowing program with a limited budget. We would like to spend more on quality coaching and equipment for the enjoyment and further progression of the girls in rowing, rather than paying fines.
I urge all parents to email your interest in boat race officiating to me at

. Boat race officiating is not difficult. You are put with an experienced BRO who will teach and guide you through the process. It is an excellent way to learn more about rowing and perhaps gain a different vantage point from sitting under the tent at regattas. Seeing a race from the Judge’s tower is by far more spectacular!

Sue Chong

Hello again,
I have had a few girls inform me that some items of clothing have gone missing in the last few weeks. Can all students and parents please check that they have their own uniform and haven’t accidentally picked up somebody elses. The items of clothing vary from school dresses, hats, jumpers etc, so please check absolutely everything. Also, if you haven’t already, please name both your school and rowing uniforms as this is the best way to find it. David and I sometimes pick up items that have been left after training without names on them, so it is difficult to find the owner.
Also, a reminder that the MGC Rowing Club is holding the boat christening/meet the patron/’Rock the Boat’ function this Saturday after training at 11am on the grass outside the canteen area. We would really appreciate your support in attendance of both rowers and parents. There will be some finger food and drinks to help us celebrate the special occasion. All rowers and coxswains will be training from 9am-11am. They must all be wearing either the rowing or sports uniform.
Payments for the students attending Hamilton are due now. Please make your payment at the general office ASAP if you haven’t already done so.
Regards,
Jono Rundell
Long Weekend training
Due to the number of coaches and rowers unavailable over the following weekend we are unable to train.
So there are NO CREWS training on Saturday 1st of Nov or on Monday 3rd and Tuesday 4th.
Training will resume with it full intensity on Wednesday.
Well done to everybody who has informed me of their unavailability at training times- we still have some people who forget and that means the rows for the girls are shorter. There are set times for the girls launching and docking where we are followed by other users on the pontoon, If we have to adjust the crews we miss our slot on the pontoon and have to launch when its next free!
The year 8s have now been set into provisional crews for the rest of term, changes can and will be made due to a variety of reasons but on the whole they should know who they are rowing with and being coxed by. Year 9's will be set into similar crews over the following week with seat racing to confirm them on the 8th of November. The senior (year 10 and 11 crews) will not be set into formal crews as they will be changed regularly to allow technical aspects of their coaching to be accommodated.
As everybody should be aware the first regatta is coming up and we will be enetering everybody into it!
Its on Saturday 15th November at Geelong. Much more information will be sent out about it including times, location, transport and the year 8s will have a session or two on regatta protocols to bring them up to speed!
If anybody is unavailable to compete at the regatta please let me know in writing so we can organise crews ASAP.
As always if there are any questions parents can email or ring me and we'll find a solution to anyproblem that arises together!
David Carr-Smith
Welcome to everybody, Or at least all those who returned their information forms!
Congratulations on surviving the first two weeks of training, everybody is doing well so far and I hope they'll keep doing so! As this is the first Email of the season there is quite a lot to cover make sure you read all the relative parts.
TRAINING The most important thing with making the season work is the information transfer. If a person can't make it to training - please make let me or you coach know. I am contactable by phone email and text so there is little reason for not getting hold of me. At this stage of the season crews are sorted out at the session and any unexplained absences affect everybody present.
I understand people have injuries but Please let me know whether its a sprained ankle or the chicken pox I can't set crews without that knowledge and often people can still come to training and learn very useful things and I don't want people to re injure themselves. Please remember to bring hats and water bottles to all training sessions as well as remembering that after exercise people will be hungry so some extra food never goes amiss!
EXERCISE As far as the amount of exercise people are getting its all going well, The trainer we have for the land sessions is VERY impressed with the effort the girls are putting in on the land sessions and its the same for all the coaches on the water- the intensity is fantastic and will make a difference to the speed of the boats when we race.
COXSWAINS In the sport of rowing there are certain truths- a good big rower will always beat the best small rower. If you can't carry your boat how can you race it? With rowing we need ( and cant compete without) one coxswain for every four rowers. Its a position we need and one that suits the smaller girls best (less weight for the crew to carry down the course). The biggest issue though is health and safety- with the weight of the boats (close to 80kg) its unsafe to mix the different heights of girls as the tall ones take the weight- and the same happens within the boat on the water. If a girl wants to row and is too small, we encourage them to cox for a season where they will learn all about it and still manage to go out on the water several times, and then the next year if they've grown to try rowing then. Its what I did!
REGATTA Due to overwhelming congestion on the river this season ( parents just ask your daughters how busy it is!) we are currently unable to hold the beginners regatta on the proposed date. we are looking into it and if there is an alternative we'll let everybody know ASAP! At this time though its not going to proceed. If you know your daughter is going to miss a regatta please let me know as soon as possible so we can plan crews, transport, boats and entries.
Finally please remember that we by sharing as much information as possible we can make it a successful season. So any questions about training ,selections, or the season in general please ask me.

New Saturday morning time
I hope you all have started to get into routine of rowing and that the early mornings aren’t as bad as you may have thought.
Due to a small clash of times on the pontoon with other schools, the first session on Saturday mornings will now be from 7:00am-9:00am. The second session will remain from 9:30am-11:30am. I apologise if this causes any clashes; however there was a big hold up last Saturday morning.
2008 Term 4 Rowing
There will be a meeting on the first day back from holidays for all students who have signed up for the coming season from 3:30pm-4:30pm. I have placed a draft copy of the term 4 timetable on the school website; however please note that this may change in the first two weeks of term 4.
I have sent out an e-mail regarding this; however i know a lot of people didn't receive it for one reason or another so could you please pass this information onto anyone that is in the rowing club.
Regards.

Rowing Recipe Book
The money from the recipe book sales that were handed out at the presentation dinner needs to be returned asap. If you haven’t been able to sell the three books, then they also need to be returned. The final deadline is the 16th of May. It is really important that this deadline is met in order for us to calculate the money made from the fundraiser.
The 2007/2008 Season Finale
At the newly reinstituted VSSSA regatta on Thursday the 28th of February, Melbourne Girls' College presented a formiddable front and took out many events in the female division. There were many tight races and we achieved fantastic results in the following events.
First in the Under 15 Double Scull
First in the Under 15 Quad Scull
First in the Under 17 Quad Scull
First in the Under 19 Quad Scull
First in the Under 19 Single Scull
The highlight no doubt was the Under17/19 Quad scull where we managed to outrace everybody in the heats so the final consisted solely of MGC girls and a clean sweep.
On Saturday we competed in the largest single sex regatta in the southern hemisphere; The Head of School Girls - on the Barwon river.
The high standard of racing meant that only 9 crews progressed straight to the semi finals out of 17. But the rest raced again in the repechages and acquitted themselves well.
Sundays Racing saw the Year 9 div 5 four come a close third in their semi final not quite making the A final (but still a top 8 result)
The Year 9 div 4 four came second and then raced the A final for a 4th overall
The Year 9 div 3 four came second and progressed to race the A final for a 4th overall.
The Year 9 div 2 quad came third in their semi not quite making the A final (still a top 8 result)
The Year 10 div 1 quad Raced their semi for a fourth place (again still in the top 8)
The Open div 2(A) single scull of Rachel Paul won her semi and went on to win the final
As did Ruby Kennedy in the Open div 2(B) single scull.
Hannah Brown and Jess Lowe both won their heats in the Open div 1 Single Scull and went on to get First and Second in the A final. This was the third consecutive Open div 1 title that Jess Lowe has won. This is an amazing achievement.
Ann Scully, Hannah Brown and Jess Lowe were all recipients of a Morongo Medal in their final year of school girls rowing for competing in three or more Head of School Girls Regattas. These medals are a symbol of the dedication and commitment these girls have given to rowing over the past years.
