RACV Energy Breakthrough

“It's more than an event - it's a new way of thinking, learning, a passport to a sustainable future and a new way of having fun!”

The RACV Energy Breakthrough is an exciting program designed to provide opportunities for students, teachers, parents and local industry to work together to design and construct a vehicle, a machine or innovation in technology that will represent an energy breakthrough.

The program encourages participants to examine and use the latest technology while considering its impact on the environment and the way people live locally and globally. (From the homepage of http://www.racvenergybreakthrough.net/)

Melbourne Girls' College has been involved with the RACV Energy Breakthrough since 2003.

We participate in the event every second year, and will next be entering the competition in 2010.

The 2008 team made two cars for the race in November held at Maryborough, Victoria. Our Junior Team’s car was pedal powered and our Senior Team’s car was a hybrid, which means it is powered partly by solar electricity as well as pedal power.

The 2008 MGC team had over 40 students involved who met every Thursday afternoon. We started our meetings with a 20 minute run to increase everyone’s fitness and motivation, but this was especially important for our drivers who will have to power the cars throughout the entire race!

The race is held in Maryborough, Country Victoria. Where hundreds of schools from around Australia camp in the middle of a race track for about three days. On the second day the Junior teams hold their triathlon race and the seniors start their 24 hour hybrid race, which runs right through the night.

The purpose of this program is to raise awareness about global warming and sustainable alternatives, especially with young people. You or your business can get involved by visiting our sponsorship and marketing page, or contact Mr Andrew Vance for other ways you can help!
