The Overseas Student Program
Welcome
to the Overseas Student Program at Melbourne Girls’ College.
In 2009 the Program
has 55 overseas students. The girls come from the many Asian countries in the
region: China, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
The
Overseas Student Program complements the diverse cultural and ethnic
composition of the school’s population.
Many
of our overseas students are attracted by this diversity and the comprehensive
academic program which is offered at Melbourne Girls’ College. The school’s
reputation of academic excellence and its emphasis on science and technology
have also appealed to potential overseas students interested in studying in
Australia.
The
Overseas Student Program at Melbourne Girls’ College aims to deliver a high
quality, personalized educational experience for all our students. In
this regard, we have put in place various procedures and programs to assist
overseas students from the time they arrive.
We
have developed a program that provides an initial orientation program and
frequent and regular monitoring of academic progress at English Language
Schools and throughout their studies at Melbourne Girls’ College.
Overseas
students are integrated with all students into mainstream classes but attend English
as a Second Language classes in Years 10 -12. An After School Program provides
assistance with homework and encourages even the most reluctant students to
improve their language skills in a comfortable and non-threatening environment.
Students
are encouraged to participate in all activities offered in the school and are
assisted in settling into the school program by fellow students and
teachers. The Overseas Student Program is assisted by staff
that are Chinese and Vietnamese speakers and have expertise in teaching
English as a Second Language.
The
school is responsible for the welfare arrangements for many of our students who
are under 18 years and have no family members in Australia. The
accommodation arrangements are made according to the needs of students and
visits are made regularly to ensure that the quality of support and care is
maintained.
The
role of the Overseas Coordinator is to liaise with the students and the International Education Division
of the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, the school, English
Language Centre and the Victorian School of Languages.
Our
priority is to ensure that all overseas students have positive experiences
while studying at Melbourne Girl’s College and that the quality of care and
support assists them in integrating into the life of the College and improving
their understanding of Australian culture.
