We warmly welcome girls and their families to the Melbourne Girls College (MGC) community, where everything we do aims at fulfilling our motto – to be a place “where girls lead and achieve.”
Our policies and practices uphold the values of excellence, teamwork and diversity. We are interested in every student’s academic and personal needs. We focus on their leadership potential and development at every year level.
The college’s student population of approximately 1200 girls reflects cultural and geographic diversity. Students born in 60 countries come to MGC from more than 200 Victorian postcodes.
Recent facilities include a science wing, library, gymnasium, performing arts centre, canteen and tennis courts. The 2007 opening of the Lyceum Learning Centre, with its flexible learning spaces and high-tech equipment for Year 7 students, was a milestone.
In our short history our reputation for excellence has grown so much that demand for enrolments exceeds available places. One reason for this is that MGC has consistently performed well in terms of academic excellence and university entry as well as in vocational pathways, reflecting our broad and rigorous educational approach.
Our 2002-2012 Strategic Plan defines six goals. These are to: • Develop and nurture girls to be confident of their ability to be leaders and to determine their place in the world • Be an innovative school, committed to improving the dynamic relationship between teaching and learning • Actively promote values which enable us to build a strong, unique and distinct school community • Maximise opportunities for all members of the school community through expanding networks and partnerships • Create an environment that values, supports and develops all staff • Equip our students to be confident participants in an evolving technology-centred world
The MGC curriculum is designed to equip our students with the skills they need for economic, social and cultural success. Committed to our role as an educational leader, we review and improve the curriculum every year. Members of the college community, proud of our reputation as an outstanding government girls’ school, will continue to work together to ensure that what we offer both anticipates and meets our students’ needs into the future.
